Pigs have a bad rap. The word itself is often used as an insult- for someone dirty, greedy, or vulgar. Yet behind the almost human-like eyes of my porcine friends, I see anything but. (Okay — they do like to roll in the dirt, but that’s not what you think. It’s how they protect themselves from bugs and sun!)
In fact, I find that a lot of misunderstandings about pigs mirror the ones we hold about ourselves… about what it means to live “the right way.” Why can’t we just… be?
You might look at a pig and see a dirty snout, a muddy body, and think, “What a filthy animal.” But what you’re seeing is just a snapshot in time, a moment of bliss after a good roll in a soothing mud bath. The mud nourishing their skin and keeping them cool.
Some of our best moments, too, are the messy ones. Anyone who’s done a mud run, built a garden bed, or gone camping knows that dirt washes off, but the joy lingers. The laughter, the freedom… that’s what stays.

That’s what I love most about pigs: they aren’t chasing success or trying to outshine anyone. They don’t measure their worth by productivity or comparison. They just are. They bask in the sun. They nap without guilt. They’re not afraid to get a little dirty.
Meanwhile, we humans so often rush, worry, and compare. We measure ourselves against invisible standards. It’s easy to feel behind or not enough. But what if contentment isn’t found in catching up, it’s in slowing down?
To feel the sun on your back. To breathe deeply. To notice the quiet hum of life around you.
As the holidays approach, I’ve been thinking about that even more. This time of year can bring so much joy, but also so much pressure. To make everything perfect. To do more, give more, be more.
But maybe we don’t need to do it all. Maybe it’s okay to rest a little, to let things be imperfect, to find peace in the simple things.
Pigs remind me that peace doesn’t need to be earned. It’s already here. In the quiet moments. In the company of those you love. In a cozy meal shared around the table, even if it’s not picture-perfect.
Clean water. Good company. A soft patch of grass. A pumpkin or two, if you’re lucky.
Maybe that’s the secret they’ve known all along:
That enough is simple. And simple is enough.
As we head into the holidays, remember your table doesn’t have to be extravagant to be full. A cozy meal, shared with love, is more than enough. If you’d like some easy, soul-warming recipes to try, you’ll find a few of my favorites right here.
