Every flock has a leader, and ours goes by the name Wallace. He’s not just any rooster—Wallace is a handsome English Orpington with soft, striking plumage and a kind eye.
Unlike the feisty reputation some roosters carry, Wallace is the perfect example of the gentle nature Orpingtons are known for. He’s friendly with people—whether you’re a familiar face or a stranger stepping into the yard for the first time.
Wallace’s Role as Head Rooster
Wallace takes his job as head rooster seriously. One of my favorite things to watch is how attentive he is to the hens. When he spots a tasty morsel in the grass or the garden, he doesn’t keep it for himself. Instead, he lets out an excited brigade of clucks and calls his ladies over, most proudly, to share the treat. It’s endlessly charming and reminds me just how thoughtful roosters can be.
He’s also an excellent protector. If a large bird flies overhead—whether it’s a hawk or even just a curious crow—Wallace is quick to sound the alarm, signaling the hens to scatter and take cover. His watchful eye and sharp instincts make him a trustworthy guardian of the flock.
Why We Love Orpington Chickens
Wallace is also a wonderful ambassador for the Orpington breed. English Orpingtons are often described as friendly, docile, and family-friendly chickens—and Wallace embodies all of those qualities. Their large size and calm temperament make them an ideal choice for backyard chicken keepers who want both beauty and a gentle disposition in their flock.
Having Wallace around has been such a joy, not only because he’s stunning to look at but also because he brings such a sense of balance and safety to the coop. He’s the kind of rooster that reminds you that chickens aren’t just farm animals—they’re personalities, protectors, and, in many ways, companions.
