Nothing says summer quite like a 99 cent frosty here in Canada.

There was just something magical about those thick, creamy chocolate Frostys on a hot day. And if you know, you know that the real experience wasn’t complete without a fresh order of salty french fries to dip straight into that icy chocolate goodness.

Sweet. Salty. Creamy. Cold.

Honestly, it’s one of those nostalgic food memories that instantly transports me right back to childhood summers.

And while Frostys technically aren’t milkshakes, they sit somewhere deliciously in-between: thicker than chocolate milk, softer than ice cream, and every bit as satisfying as a classic chocolate shake. If you love milkshakes, frozen hot chocolate, or creamy frappes, you’re going to absolutely love this homemade vegan Frosty recipe.

This recipe actually came together because of my daughter.

One day after school, she came home talking excitedly about milkshake days at school on Fridays and asked if I could make one at home too. Since she doesn’t eat dairy, I didn’t want her to feel left out or like she was missing out on those little fun childhood experiences everyone else gets to enjoy.

So naturally, I headed into the kitchen to experiment.

I wanted something rich, creamy, chocolatey, and nostalgic. Something that felt like a proper treat. Something reminiscent of those classic Frostys I remembered growing up… or maybe somewhere between a thick chocolate milkshake and soft serve ice cream.

And honestly?

This one turned out perfect.

My daughter was absolutely smitten. My husband immediately declared it the “best shake ever.” And I happily sat there slurping away, already mentally adding it into our regular summer treat rotation.

The Best Vegan Frosty Recipe

If you’ve been searching for a vegan Wendy’s Frosty copycat recipe, this is the one.

It’s creamy, chocolatey, perfectly frosty, and made with simple ingredients that are easy to find. No complicated ingredients. No soaking cashews. No coconut flavour overpowering everything.

Just a rich, smooth frozen chocolate treat that tastes incredibly close to the drive-thru favourite.

And because it’s dairy-free, everyone in our family can enjoy it.

Why This Homemade Frosty Works So Well

What makes a Frosty different from a regular milkshake is the texture.

A classic milkshake is usually thinner and more drinkable, while a Frosty has that signature thick, spoonable consistency that slowly melts as you eat it. This recipe captures that texture beautifully.

We make ours in our slushie machine, which gives it the most unbelievably smooth and creamy consistency. If you already own one, I genuinely recommend trying it this way because it feels almost identical to a real Frosty.

That said, I think an ice cream machine would work really well too.

And even if you only have a blender, you can still absolutely make this recipe happen at home.

Our New Favourite Summer Treat

Ever since we started experimenting with frozen drinks and desserts at home, it has honestly become one of our favourite little family rituals.

The kids get excited whenever the slushie machine comes out. Family movie nights suddenly feel extra special. Backyard gatherings become a little more fun. And there’s something really satisfying about recreating restaurant-style treats at home for a fraction of the cost.

This vegan Frosty recipe has quickly become one of our most requested creations.

It’s fast to throw together, ridiculously creamy, and tastes like a cross between a classic chocolate milkshake and a Wendy’s Frosty.

Basically dessert in cup form.

Simple Ingredients, Big Payoff

One of the best things about this recipe is how simple it is.

You only need:

  • Vegan chocolate milk
  • Vegan half and half
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sugar
  • Vegan chocolate syrup

That’s it.

The vegan chocolate milk creates the base flavour, while the dairy-free half and half gives the Frosty its ultra-creamy texture. The chocolate syrup deepens the flavour and makes everything taste extra indulgent.

We personally use Silk Almond Dark Chocolate Milk when making ours, but any creamy non-dairy chocolate milk should work well. Almond, cashew, macadamia, or even pea milk are all great options.

Tips for the Creamiest Vegan Frosty

If you want the best possible texture, here are a few quick tips:

  • Start with cold ingredients
  • Use a creamier non-dairy milk for the richest result
  • Chill your serving glasses beforehand
  • Don’t over-freeze the mixture or it may become icy instead of creamy

And if you really want to take it over the top?

Top it with coconut whip and dark chocolate flakes.

Absolutely incredible.

Don’t Have a Slushie Machine?

No problem.

While the slushie machine gives the most authentic Frosty texture, you can still make this recipe other ways.

An ice cream machine should work beautifully if you follow your machine’s instructions and remove the mixture once it reaches a soft, creamy consistency.

You could also freeze the mixture into ice cubes and blend it with a splash of vegan chocolate milk or dairy-free cream until smooth. The texture may not be quite as silky, but the flavour will still be delicious.

The Perfect Dairy-Free Chocolate Shake

Whether you call it a vegan Frosty, a dairy-free milkshake, or a frozen chocolate shake, one thing is certain:

This recipe disappears fast in our house.

It’s nostalgic, creamy, refreshing, and somehow manages to feel both comforting and cooling at the same time.

And honestly? Watching my daughter enjoy something she might otherwise miss out on makes it taste even sweeter.

Notes

A note on chocolate milk: We use Silk Almond Dark Chocolate Milk when making this recipe, however any non-dairy chocolate milk will work. When making or looking to purchase a chocolate milk, we do recommend creamier milk bases, such as almond, cashew or macadamia milk for best results. Pea milk would also work too if you avoid nuts.
A note on chocolate syrup: It may surprise you how many conventional chocolate syrups are naturally dairy free/vegan. We use Nesquik Chocolate syrup, here in Canada. Always check the ingredients to ensure they are suitable for your needs.
Don’t have a slushie machine? I have not tried it, but theoretically you should be able to freeze the mixed ingredients together into ice cubes and then add to a blender with a splash of vegan chocolate milk and/or vegan half and half (less than 1/2 cup) to help the blades catch and pulverize until smooth. Pulse until thick and smooth.
